Decorated overall with grisaille panels, flowers, wreaths and ribbons, the canted rectangular hinged top enclosing nine lidded compartments, on downswept legs joined by a concave-sided stretcher

Lot Essay

This form of rectangular and cut-cornered work-box relates to a work-table pattern in the 1795 Sketch Book of Gillows of London and Lancaster (L. Boynton (ed.), Gillow Furniture Designs 1760-1800, Royston, 1995, fig. 77).
A related painted satinwood and rosewood work-table was sold by Mr. and Mrs. Mark Murray Threipland, Fingask Castle, Rait, by Perth, Christie's house sale, 26-28 April 1993, lot 210.
