Lot Essay

The tabernacle frame with its serpentined and voluted cornice is conceived in the Roman manner promoted by James Gibbs's, Book of Architecture of 1727. The fashion for such coloured frames, combining statuary marble enrichments on a sicilian jasper ground, was much favoured by the sculptor Sir Henry Cheere (d.1781).
