Lot Essay

A closely related salver or plate-stand for a sideboard-table, with richly carved front, is illustrated in P. Macquoid and R. Edwards, The Dictionary of English Furniture, London, rev.ed., 1954, vol. III, p. 164, fig. 3. Sometimes these stands were made in sets to take salvers of different sizes on a sideboard. A set of three was sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 18 April 1996, lot 63.
