Lot Essay

The sun-flowered medallion splat beneath a husk-festooned and arched crest-rail relates to a pattern in Messrs. A. Hepplewhite & Co.'s, The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide, 1788, pl 9. A closely related splat featured on a set of herm-legged chairs sold anonymously, Sotheby's London, 21 February 1997, lot 113.
