A George III brass striking lantern clock for the Turkish market, third quarter 18th century
The breakarch dial with foliate scroll spandrels to the Turkish chapter ring (chapter ring with quarter hour marks cut away then turned and re-engraved for five minutes and later minute hand), a disc in the arch signed Geo. Clarke Leaden Hall Street London, matted centre lacking alarm disc, steel hands, with openwork side frets and typical straps to bell stand with urn finial to the top, brass doors to the sides (one probably later), sheet iron panel to rear and hoop suspension, the twin train weight-driven movement with verge escapement and countwheel strike, the minute wheel inscribed with practise engraving Rob...Robi... ...dini, now lacking alarm train -- 15in. (38cm.) high; on a later purpose-made oak pedestal, with fluted decoration and dentil mouldings, with hinged door to upper section -- 66½in. (170cm.) high (2)
