Château Haut-Brion--Vintage 1945
Pessac (Graves), 1er cru classé. Château-bottled
Slightly corroded capsules
Slightly bin-soiled labels. Levels: upper shoulder
Tasting note: Another great wine. Consistently fine. One of Haut Brion's best ever vintages. It seems to have regained depth of colour with age, again almost opaque but with mature amber rim. On nose and palate, it is different from its Medoc peers. More earthy, but not in a clodhopping way, and with a tobacco-like element to its taste. The bouquet variously described as gently and fragrant, sweet, vanilla and chocolate, warm, spicey, complete-and always remarkably good. Prettty full-bodied yet velvety, with loads of sweetening and enriching alcohol, its tannin masked by richness and extract. Great length, wonderful aftertaste. M.B.
