Château Latour--Vintage 1961
Pauillac, 1er cru classé. Château-bottled
Capsule slightly damaged in the second lot.
Levels in the first lot: base of neck. In the following 3 lots: top shoulder. In the last 2 lots: upper shoulder
Tasting note: Not surprisingly, immensely deep, opaque centereed when young but, though still retaining considerable depth of colour, now less intense, with a lovely mature rim. Even after two decades appeared to be closed up and low-keyed, though it developed a gingery, cedary, fig-like fragrance with air. Huge, packed, fleshy, austere but magnificent wine, due to its high alcohol and tannins. Almost chewable. I have tasted more Latour than any other '61 and believe that, like the '28, it will need a full half century to come round. M.B.
