Painted in Safed in the 1940s, after the artist's return from Paris, Sabbath Dinner belongs to a series of interiors relating to the artist's life in this spiritual centre. The paintings of the period depict synagogues, holy people, as well as communal and religious customs such as Passover and Sabbath meals, held in traditional homes with high oriental vaulted ceilings. The recurring feature is the stained glass window as well as a "Mizrach" on the wall reminding us of the sacredness of the ritual.
