Lot Essay

Johann Zagelmann was born in Tescheu in Austria. He studied at the Vienna Academy and is recorded as being a landscape and still life painter.

Paintings by Zagelmann rarely appear on the art market and it is clear that he must have come into contact with the work of Franz Werner von Tamm as his work and palette are clearly influenced by him (for comparison see F. Zeri,'La Natura Morta in Italia, Electa, Milan 1989, p.816, no. 967)
