The work in this and the following lot come from the collection of the writer and journalist Robert Giraud. Giraud, a close friend and collaborator of Doisneau's, first met the photographer in Paris in the late 1940s. Accompanied by Giraud, Doisneau searched the streets of the city for subjects he recognized to express everyday life in Paris and specifically the life of the clochards living along the banks of the Seine and within the margins of Parisian society. Together with Giraud's texts the images were presented as articles in such magazines as Paris Presse and Point de vue. During this period Doisneau was also doing fashion photography, primarily for Vogue, and his projects with Giraud were an important outlet for him as an artist.
There are no other prints of this image or of that in the following lot in the collection of Robert Giraud.
