Lot Essay

Designed as a holder for matches to be struck on the stone. This unusual design appears to find its source from Hieronymus Bosch's 'Garden of Delights'. For another example of such a match-holder see A.K. Snowman, Carl Fabergé, Goldsmith to the Imperial Court of Russia,, London, 1979, p. 47 ill.
