Each circular, the gadrooned border with shells and acanthus at intervals, one side engraved with a coat-of-arms in a garter motto beneath a princely bonnet, marked on border and on reverse, also engraved with weights in marks and lotz

Lot Essay

The coat-of-arms and princely bonnet are those of Metternich, as borne by Klemens Metternich, Prince of Metternich-Winneburg-Beilstein (1773-1859). Prince Metternich, celebrated Austrian statesman, is most famous as the leader of the Congress of Vienna in 1814-15. Champion of conservatism, he formed the victorious alliance against Napoleon I and restored Austria as a leading European power.
