Vase-form on a shaped square slightly domed stand with four ball feet and an urn finial, the body on four reeded paw supports and with two pendant ring and lion's-mask handles, engraved with band of military trophies and oak leaves, with presentation inscription on one side, the domed cover with a laurel leaf handle enclosing an anchor, marked under base, on inside heating chamber, cover and handle

Lot Essay

The engraved inscription reads: "Presented by the UNDERWRITERS of LONDON to Mrs. MARGARET PEMBERTON in testimony of their Respect for the Memory of her late Son CAPTAIN GEORGE PEMBERTON, Commander of the SHIP WILLDING of Liverpool, who died on the 20th Day of November 1795 of the WOUNDS he received in a most GALLANT ACTION with a FRENCH PRIVATEER of superior Force when bound on a Voyage to Jamaica in which Action CAPTAIN PEMBERTON did HONOR to the Character of a BRITISH SAILOR by destroying the Enemys Ship and preserving his own."
