PROPERTY FROM THE ESTATE OF MR AND MRS MILES VALENTINE
Born in England in 1904, Mrs. E. Miles Valentine moved to Philadelphia at a very young age with her mother Jessie Drew-Bear, an accomplished artist. As their enthusiasm for horses and steeplechasing developed, Mr. and Mrs. Valentine had horseracing farms in Unionville, Pennsylvania and Ireland. Mr. Valentine died in 1978 and Mrs. Valentine continued her support of the sport until her death last year at the age of 96.
Steeplechasing became the passion of Mrs. Valentine and she, together with her husband, created a legacy that spanned five decades. From 1957 to 2000, the Valentines contributions to steeplechasing were unparalleled and the family's impact on the field created a foundation for the future of the sport in the United States. Although their signature jockey silks were dotted with whimsical pink and cerise hearts, the serious nature with which Mrs. Valentine undertook the sport can be seen in the family's numerous wins including four American Grand Nationals, three Maryland Hunt Cups and countless others. Training and racing in Europe as well, they won the prestigious Galway Plate in 1962. A strong family tradition was established, and her daughter and grandchildren are all active participants in the sport as well.
In addition to her love of steeplechasing and horses, Mrs. Valentine was a great supporter of the arts, amassing an important collection of sporting pictures that will be sold at Christie's on June 1, 2001 here in New York.
