LOWRY, Malcolm. Under the Volcano. New York, 1947. 8o. Original tan cloth (worn at corners, spine faded, a little soiled) FIRST EDITION, INSCRIBED TO JAZZ GUITARIST EDDIE CONDON: "To Eddie Condon with all power to your wild hand at it's wildest (not forgetting Eddie Lang though) with love and respect from the author. Malcolm Lowry March the fourth 1947".

Lowry was an amateur ukulele player and great fan of music, especially the guitar, frequently attending jazz clubs (at the time of the inscription he was in New York for the publication of this novel) and it is entirely in keeping that he should be in Condon's club. That he inscribed the book so warmly is unique; Lowry was frequently unable to sign at all (whether this was due to superstition or the delerium tremens is argued by biographers). In any case, inscribed copies are noticably scarce.
