Lowry was an amateur ukulele player and great fan of music, especially the guitar, frequently attending jazz clubs (at the time of the inscription he was in New York for the publication of this novel) and it is entirely in keeping that he should be in Condon's club. That he inscribed the book so warmly is unique; Lowry was frequently unable to sign at all (whether this was due to superstition or the delerium tremens is argued by biographers). In any case, inscribed copies are noticably scarce.
