STEINBECK, John. The Grapes of Wrath. New York, 1939. 8o. Original cloth (clean and tight, no shelfwear to bottom edges), original dust jacket illustrated by Hader (spine evenly faded, offset on edges of jacket flaps just starting, few small spots on the front panel at the upper left of the spine fold), a much better than usual copy of this Pulitzer novel.

FIRST EDITION, INSCRIBED WITH A DRAWING. An interesting association. Steinbeck inscribed the present copy on the free endpaper to Robert Kriendler, the owner of the famed 21 Club, with the unusual sentiment: "Scatalogically, John Steinbeck," followed by a small drawing of a strolling duck underneath his signature. (He apparently reserved use of the duck doodle for particular inscriptions). Goldstone & Payne A12a.
