First English edition, PRESENTATION COPY inscribed and dated by Wharton in the year of publication on front free endpaper to Howard Sturgis, an intimate friend of Henry James and frequent participant in the James/Wharton intellectual circle: "Howard Sturgis from E.W. [-after huit in a Bacchic frenzy-] In remembrance of an afternoon with Euripedes Nov. 10th 1908." An interesting and jovial two-part inscription with a short note evidently added while the afternoon progressed.
