Lot Essay

The Nouveau Theatre is celebrated for its survey of the country house during the Augustan Age as recorded in the series of plates engraved by Johannes Kip and drawn by Leonard Knyff. The highly detailed views of the great country seats of England descibe them during a period of great mercantile prosperity when many were restored and expanded. Other views in the series that are not included in this lot include The Palace and St. James Park, Longleat, Chatsworth, Hampton Court and Knole.
