The superb quality of this piece together with its brass trellis supports relates to furniture produced by the London cabinet-maker John McLean (see S.Redburn, 'John McLean and Son', Furniture History, 1978, pl.32-34), while the brass star inlaid corners recall the work of George Oakley such as appear on the furniture produced for Papworth Hall (see R. Edwards, The Dictionary of English Furniture, vol.III, 1954, p.202, fig.42 for a card table from this commission).
