Lot Essay

Messrs. A. Jennens and T.H. Bettridge were the most celebrated of the Birmingham papier maché manufacturers, who flourished between 1816 and 1864. Their early production consisted mainly of trays, decorated chiefly by Joseph Booth, who was known for his 'exquisite imitations of Chinese and Japanese ornament'. An example of the latter was produced for the Prince Regent in 1824 (see G.Beard and C.Gilbert, Dictionary of English Furniture Makers 1660-1840, 1986, p.484).
