The tomato-red field with an overall lattice of aubergine, ivory, sandy yellow and dark blue bands containing angular floral motifs linking stylised palmettes, the panels between containing further palmettes and stylised dragons, in an ivory stylised glass and serrated leaf border between mill-pattern stripes, considerable old restoration

Lot Essay

The evolution of the 'dragon' design has been well documented by Ellis (Charles Grant: Early Caucasian Rugs, Washington 1976, pp.12-16 and 32-59) and Yetkin (Serare: Early Caucasion Carpets in Turkey,London, 1978, vol.II, pp.8-40). The present example represents the last stages of the development, with the design acquiring a more village feel than the rigorous examples of the early seventeenth century.
