Lot Essay

The composition derives from the Winter Landscape by Jan Brueghel I and Joos de Momper II, signed and dated 'BRVEGHEL 1599', but dated by Klaus Ertz to circa 1615, in the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Schloss Wilhelmshöhe, Cassel (see K. Ertz, Jan Brueghel der Ältere, Cologne, 1979, pp. 482-3 and 624, no. 414, fig. 585). The three horses pulling the covered wagon recur in a sketch of Carriages, riders and travellers by Jan Brueghel II in the Rijksmuseum Twenthe, Enschede (idem, Jan Brueghel der Jüngere, Freren, 1984, pp. 505-6, no. 336, illustrated, dated to the late 1630s).

Ertz (Josse de Momper der Jüngere, Freren, 1986, p. 575) lists three further versions of this composition: in the Bazalel National Museum, Jerusalem, on panel, 38 x 47.5 cm., 'probably by Joseph van Bredael'; formerly with Richard Green, London, 1977, on panel, 22.8 x 39.3 cm., as Jan Brueghel II and Joos de Momper II, Ertz's no. A196, p. 651, 'of outstanding quality, is likely to be by Frans de Momper'; and formerly with Galerie Finck, Brussels, on copper, 24.5 x 32.5 cm., 'free copy in the style of Joseph Vredael (perhaps by that artist, in fact)'.
