Lot Essay

We are grateful to Dr. Luuk Pijl for confirming the attribution. He will include the picture in his forthcoming catalogue raisonné on the work of Bril. This picture relates closely to one by Bril in the Palazzo Pitti (inv. no. 1890/598), in which the landscape is identical but the staffage differs (see D. Bodart, Rubens e la pittura fiamminga del Seicento, Florence, 1977, no. 155, illustrated). Dr. Pijl believes that the figures in the present picture are the work of Bril with some studio participation in the landscape.
