The artist's relationship with Jan Abrahamsz. Beerstraten is uncertain, but, like Jan and his son Abraham, Anthonie specialized in depictions of townscapes, sea battles and Mediterranean ports, and that similarity has led to confusion over their various identitites. Paintings signed J, I, or Johannes Beerstraten are assumed to be by Jan; it was, however, unclear who painted the works signed A. Beerstraten, until Anthonie's Christian name was established from a painting, dated 1664, sold at auction by Snouck van Loosen in Enkhuizen in 1886, depicting a Levantine port, whilst Abraham's hand was established on the basis of comparison with the View of the Old Town Hall in Kampen, dated 1665 (formerly Lansdowne collection, Bowood House, Wiltshire), that is signed Abraham Beerstraten.
