Lot Essay

Like the artist's Old man praying (Private collection, Switzerland; Sumowski, op. cit., IV, p. 2506, no. 1676, illustrated p. 2512), this picture is strongly influenced by the early work of Jan Lievens, comparable to the latter's Bearded old man formerly in the Staatliches Museum, Schwerin, or the eponymous picture in the Herzog Anton Ulrich-Museum, Brunswick.
