Lot Essay

We are grateful to Dr. David Marshall for confirming the attribution on the basis of a transparency. He considers the picture 'typical of Viviano in the 1660s'. The staffage is most likely by the Spaniard, Vicente Giner, who was recruited from the studio of Cornelis de Wael in the early 1660s to paint figures for Codazzi.
