Lot Essay

The composition relates closely, albeit from a lower viewpoint, to the painting offered at Sotheby's, London, 5 July 1989, lot 4, as 'Follower of Antonio Joli'. Mario Manzelli has proposed the hypothesis that Joli may have been commissioned to produce such a view by John, Lord Brudenell (1735-1770) on his Grand Tour from 1754-60 - it is known that he commissioned at least thiry-eight French, Italian and Sicilian views from the artist - and that, if so, that this type may relate to that commission (Antonio Joli, Venice, 1999, p. 121).
