Mrs. Hennings explains the secrecy surrounding the ceremony depicted on the painting's original backing:
'E. Martin Hennings painted this picture from behind a cover of trees. This ceremony was of a highly secret nature and white men were forbidden to watch. Mr. Hennings painted this on the spot unknown to the Indians, and then hurried to his studio to finish the painting. This was painted just outside of the Taos Publis, on sacred ceremonial soil. This painting was actually painted at the ceremonial rite. The horseman at top is watchful that no outsiders are nearby. This ceremony is most illegal.'
