Circa 1900, gilt crowned globe marks, shape no. 3860, gilt NP1404, after a design by Louis Solon, executed and signed A(lboin) Birks, the raised paste gilding based on designs by John Bowers, one with retailer's mark for BIRKS-ELLIS-RYRIE LTD. TORONTO
The shallow domed cover with spire finial, of elongated baluster form with upright scroll handles, painted and hand tooled in white slip with paired mythic archers emblematic of Love and War, the reverse with corresponding ribbon-tied trophies, on socle foot and square base

Lot Essay

See Joan Jones, Mintons, The First Two Hundred Years of Design & Production, Shrewsbury, 1993, p. 320, for a pair of 'Prototype vases'. It is interesting to note that the Minton directors choose this model to commemorate the firm's Bicentenary and that Joan Jones selected this work as the ultimate illustration for her tome on the factory's history. In addition, as there are more than ten members of the Birks' family listed in associated with Minton, it is likely that the Toronto retailer identified on this vase is related to this famous family of craftsmen.
