Lot Essay

The design for the present appliques derives from several 18th century examples. A similar model from the Hôtel de Deux-ponts, circa 1780, but without trophy finials, may be found at Aschaffenburg Castle. Another pair, circa 1780, this time without the serpents, is in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
