Lot Essay

The Parisian sculptor Henry Cahieux is recorded as having supplied Ferdinand Barbedienne with exclusive models for casting in bronze, among them vases with applied bas-reliefs depicting various subjects. The burgeoning vogue for a new exotic style, resulting from Japan opening its doors to westerners during the second half of the 19th century, was capitalized on to the full by Barbedienne, who included numerous japonaise-inspired models in his retail catalogues of the 1870s and 1880s. See lot 254 for a further note on Ferdinand Barbedienne.
