Collation: [18 2-46 58; 6-318 326 338 346 35-388] blank, 1/2r table, 1/3r contents, 5/8 blank; 6/1r text, 38/7v colophon, 38/8r register, 38/8v blank). 294 leaves. 70 lines, double column. Types: 9:165G (headings), 7:92(83)G (text). 20-line initial space opening text; 2-, 3- and 8-line initial spaces. First initial illuminated by a contemporary German artist in punched gold on blue ground with white foliate scrolls within pink and green frame, other initials in red or blue, paragraph marks and capital strokes in red. (Faint dampstain in lower margin, some marginal worming in first and final leaves, very small puncture in first 3 leaves.)
Binding: contemporary Nuremberg blind-tooled calf over thick unbevelled wooden boards, by Kyriss shop 118 (Bogenfries): border of rosettes and Laubstab, central panel of trellis pattern with pomegranates (front cover) or diapered and with griffin tool (back cover), title tooled on upper cover, old paper spine label (rather worn, lacking center- and cornerpiece bosses and fore-edge clasps).
Provenance: large woodcut bookplate colored by hand in ochre, orange and green, possibly of Charles II of Spain and Marie Louise d'Orleans (m. 1679-1689) -- Munich, Royal Library, duplicate: "Duplum" and pencilled shelf-mark on front pastedown -- Christie's London, 8 December 1982, lot 40 (to Lathrop Harper).
Third edition of this work on civil law by the great Italian jurist, Paulus de Castro. His Consilia belonged to the prevailing contemporary legal method, the so-called mos italicus, grounded in a scholastic analysis of the authoritative texts.
