SALICETUS, Nicolaus (d. ca. 1493). Antidotarius animae. Strassburg: Johann (Reinhard) Grüninger, 4 March 1493.
Chancery 8o (151 x 102 mm). Collation: A-S8 (A1r xylographic white-on-black title, A1v blank, A2r preface, A3v table, A6v text, S8v blank). 144 leaves. 34 lines and headline, double column. Type: 11:91G (headings), 15:64aG (text). 2- 5- and 7-line initial spaces, some with printed guide-letters. Larger initials supplied in red or blue with contrasting penwork decoration, smaller initials in red or blue, occasionally with flourishes, paragraph marks, capital strokes, and some underlining in red. (Somewhat soiled and browned, A1.8 rehinged, several leaves repaired, occasionally touching text without loss.)
Binding: contemporary blind-stamped sheep, sides with central diapered field filled with fleurs-de-lys, outer border with floral spray, rosettes and "Ave Maria" scroll, the tools not in Kyriss or Schwenke-Sammlung; evidence of one fore-edge clasp and center- and centerpiece bosses (somewhat worn with leather missing from foot of spine, endpapers renewed).

Fifth edition, the fourth of six printed by Grüninger. The main work of Salicetus, a Bern medical doctor and abbot of the Cistercian abbey at Baumgarten, the Antidotarium animae was a popular devotional text. It was printed in almost 30 editions in the 15th and 16th centuries. This volume previously belonged to Henry Parry Liddon, a close friend and travelling companion of Lewis Carroll (C. L. Dodgson), who was a student of Christ Church, canon and chancellor of St. Paul's Cathedral (as his ownership stamp enumerates), and, more significantly for this volume, a distinguished preacher and theologian.
