Chancery 2o (285 x 205 mm). Collation: 1-48; a-c8 d-n8.6 o6 p-v8.6 x-y6 z-E8.6 F-O6.8.8 P-S6 T8 title, blank, 1/2r table, 4/8 blank; a1r text, T6v colophon, T7-8 blank). 317 leaves (of 320, without the three blanks). 47 lines and headline, double column. Types: 160G (title, headlines), 91aG (text), 91b(G) (smaller headings). 2- to 6-line initial spaces with guide-letters. Some later penwork initials. (Some browning and staining, several marginal tears, one just affecting headline.)
Binding: contemporary blind-stamped sheep over unbevelled wooden boards, sides tooled with leaf, lily, flower and garland ornaments, the tools not in Kyriss or Schwenke-Sammlung; two chased brass fore-edge clasps, spine painted grey and lettered in red and black, spine liner from a 14TH-CENTURY GRAMMATICAL MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM, evidence of early chain staple at top of rear board (somewhat worn, without the ten center- and cornerpiece bosses).
Provenance: verses in German in an early hand on O6r -- Eger (Bohemia), Dominican convent of St. Wenceslaus: 17th-century title inscriptions -- Graf Konrad Reuttner von Weyl: Bloomsbury Book Auctions, 31 October 1985, lot 136 (to Lathrop Harper).
Third edition. Often misattributed to Aegidius Arifaber, the text is probably by Johannes Busch (b. 100), a proponent of the Devotio Moderna. He studied at Zwolle before entering the house at Windesheim, the center of the movement. The first edition of the Speculum exemplorum was printed at Deventer in 1481 (Goff S-651).
