THOMAS AQUINAS (ca. 1225-1274, Saint). Quaestiones disputatae: De potentia dei. [Cologne: Johann Koelhoff, the Elder, ca. 1476].
Chancery 2o (283 x 205 mm). Collation: [1-188 196 2010 218 226 23-278 28-296] blank, text, 12/5-12/7r blank, 29/3r finis, 29/3v blank, 29/4r tituli quaestionum, 29/5v-29/6 blank). 225 leaves (of 226, without first blank, final blank preserved as pastedown). 40 lines, double column. Type: 4:95bG. 6- to 3-line initial spaces. Flourished Lombard initials in red, paragraph marks in red on and, in a different hand, on 19/2v-19/6r. A few traces of early manuscript quiring in lower right corners of rectos. Two-line impression of bearer type on 12/4v (in both columns). (A few marginal wormholes in first quire, marginal tear to 29/5.)
Binding: contemporary Augsburg binding of blind-tooled goatskin over bevelled wooden boards, bound at the Benedictine monastery of SS. Ulrich and Afra (Kyriss shop 2), sides with intersecting broad and narrow fillets forming large diapered panel, the border filled with repeated rosette tools (Schwenke-Sammlung Rosette 181=Kyriss 5), the panel with repeated head of Christ tools (Kyriss 8); single central fore-edge clasp (retaining lettered brass catchplate and clasp attach, lacking clasp); remains of contemporary paper label on upper cover, later paper labels and faded lettering on spine; quire guards in first and last quires respectively from a 12th-century(?) manuscript with neumes and from a line of large textura script (covers rubbed, a gouge out of leather on lower cover, head of spine chipped); preserving a few deckle edges.
Provenance: a few marginal notes and corrections, apparently by the rubricator -- Donaueschingen, Court Library, Princes of Fürstenberg: sale, Sotheby's, London, 1 July 1994, lot 306 (to Quaritch).
FIRST EDITION. Johann Koelhoff the Elder, a native of Lübeck and energetic entrepreneur, plied several trades, as goldsmith, wool merchant, publisher, bookseller and printer. The output of his press, active from 1472 to 1493, consisted almost exclusively of theological and homiletic texts in Latin, including five editions of different works by Thomas Aquinas. This edition includes a few compositorial errors: two and a half words of text at the end of 20/9v and the last line of text on were omitted; these are supplied in two different early hands, the first the rubricator/annnotator's, the second possibly the printer's. Just under four lines of text at the end of 25/8v are repeated on (these are neatly crossed out). The two blank leaves in quire 12, following a short (third of a column) page of text on 12/4v, are due to erroneous casting off of the copy-text.
A FINE, FRESH COPY. HC 1414*; BMC I, 219 (IB. 3482-3); Harvard/Walsh 369; Goff T-175.
