Roman and italic types, 32 lines. 5 six-line grotesque woodcut outline initials, four-line arabesque woodcut initials and foliate woodcut outline initials. Foliate woodcut and type ornament headpieces, woodcut arabesque tailpieces, Codoré's woodcut "herald on horseback" device repeated on both titles (Renouard 188). One double-page woodcut plate and one woodcut plate (both inserted after H4) and 14 full-page woodcut illustrations. (A few very pale foxmarks, occasional slight marginal paper flaws/creases not affecting text, generally very clean.) Contemporary limp vellum, contemporary manuscript ink title on spine (hinges lightly cracked, front and back sides with two small wormholes extending to pastedowns, some light soiling, partially affecting spine title); morocco-backed folding cloth case.
FIRST EDITION OF THIS SPLENDID FêTE BOOK. The work records the celebrations on the occasion of the entry of Charles IX and Élizabeth of Austria into Paris in 1571. The king entered the city on March 6th, but illness prevented the Queen from accompanying him. She entered on March 29th. The woodcuts record a number of allegorical statues on monumental arches and bases, specially erected for Charles' entry. Similar statues, redesigned to better suit the Queen, were mounted on the same arches and bases. The woodcuts without portraits depict these monuments in much the same manner: since they were printed from composite woodblocks, the lower part of each image, illustrating the arch or base, is used twice, with different blocks cut to depict the statues surmounting them. According to the privilege, THE WOODCUTS WERE DESIGNED AND CUT BY OLIVIER CODORé, who identifies himself in the privilege as an engraver of precious stones.
Most of the text is by Simon Bouquet, with supplementary verses by Ronsard, Jamyn, Dorat, Pasquier and others. The fourth section, Congratulation de la Paix, consisting of nine leaves of verse by Pasquier, is present here, though not found in all copies.
