8o. (178 x 108 mm). Contemporary red morocco gilt, Rothschild arms in center of both sides, gilt edges, original pictorial wrapper bound in (front inner hinge split).
Provenance: Betty von Rothschild: presentation inscription and binding -- [Sotheby Parke Bernet, 30 October 1973, lot 289 (to Lathrop Harper)].
FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, with the points of "Heine Gedichte III" on half-title and the printer's name "Voigt in Wandsbeck" on last page, PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY HEINE on preliminary blank of the binding: "Der Frau Baronin James v. Rothschild überreicht dieses Werk, mit den heitersten Glück- wünschen zum neuen Jahre der Verfasser Heinrich Heine Paris, 2 Januar 1852."
"Presentation copy for the New Year of Heine's last and most poignant cycle of verse... Heine's uncle Salomon gave Harry an entrée to visit the Rothschilds during his London stay. The families had established trade links and Heine's mother entertained high hopes that her son would have a similarly glittering business career. The dedicatee of this volume, Betty von Rothschild, was the matriarch of the French branch of the family, whose salons Heine frequented in Paris from 1832 onwards." (Exhibition catalogue "For Freedom's Battle": Heinrich Heine and England, London: Christie's 1998, number 106). The friendship between Betty von Rothschild and Heinrich Heine was especially close in the 1830s, when Heine wrote that Betty's "pretty, smiling face" was constantly in his memory.
