Woodcut dolphin and anchor device (Fletcher 5) on title, aa1 and verso of last leaf, several leaves with woodcut diagrams, initial spaces with guide letters. (Light marginal dampstaining, portion of front free endpaper torn away and mended.)
Binding: contemporary English blind-tooled calf over pasteboard, sides panelled with intersecting triple fillets, the central panel diapered, a repetition of one tool filling the borders, two other tools decorating the center compartments, spine in five compartments, one with later morocco lettering-piece, title lettered on fore-edge; pastedowns cut from a 14th century legal manuscript on vellum including two illuminated initals (lacking 2 pairs of fore-edge ties, ends of joints cracked, light wear to corners).
Provenance: ROGER ASCHAM (1515-1568), English humanist and tutor to Queen Elizabeth I: ownership inscription and Greek motto, dated 18 November 1565, presented as a gift to -- John Fortescue (1531?-1607), Chancellor of the Exchequer: inscription on title -- Charles Hoare: bookplate -- [Randall and Windle, cat. FIRST ALDINE EDITION. This combination of texts on Roman agriculture was first printed by Jenson at Venice in 1472 (for another incunable edition, see lot 115). IMPORTANT ASSOCIATION COPY from the library of the author of The Scholemaster, a plaine and perfite way of teachyng children to understand, write, and speake in Latin tong (1570). Aldus and his successors were remarkably successful in marketing their editions throughout Northern Europe, particularly in France, Germany and the Low Countries. Early English ownership of Aldine editions, however, appears to be much rarer.
