Edo Period (Late 17th Century)
The pear-shaped body and long waisted neck painted in iron-red and gilt on underglaze blue with flowering peony and chrysanthemum, a central roundel to the front enclosing respectively the letters 'S' and 'O', set with a loop handle and short spout (one with a rim and handle restoration, the other with small rim chips)

Porcelain inscribed with Roman letters was made in Japan on order from Holland. 'S' stands for syroop (syrup), 'O' for olie (oil), 'A' for azijn (vinegar), and 'Z' for zoya (soy sauce).
