Lot Essay

The Martin brothers developed these functional and sculptural forms from creatures that had previously decorated their stoneware clockcases of the 1880's. Although here they are naturalistic they can often take on a caricature of a politician or judge. These two birds (lots 43 & 44) are modelled on the same bird and decorated with different plumage
