PINDAR. [Odes]. Olympia. Pythia. Nemea. Isthmia. -- CALLIMACHUS. Hymmi. -- DIONYSIUS PERIEGETES. De situ orbis. -- LYCOPHRON. Alexandra, obscurum poema, in Greek. Edited by Aldo Manuzio. Venice: Aldo Manuzio and Andrea Torresano, January 1513.
Aldine 8o (158 x 100 mm). Greek type. Woodcut dolphin and anchor device (Fletcher 5) on title, later red ruling throughout, initial spaces with guide letters. (Some light browning, lacks blank last leaf 24/4.) Late 18th-century straight grained red morocco, single gilt fillet border, gilt Aldine device block added to center of both covers probably by Storr of Grantham, spine in six compartments, gilt lettered in five (light rubbing to spine ends and edges). Provenance: Sir John Hayford Thorold, Syston Park (armorial bookplate and binding-embellishment); catalogue cuttings (pasted down on front fly-leaves).
EDITIO PRINCEPS of Pindar's Odes and Lycophron's only surviving poem, second edition in Greek of Callimachus' Hymns and Dionysius Periegetis. Although his copy-texts were faulty, Aldus's edition served as the basis of most subsequent editions until the 19th century. Adams P-1218; Ahmanson-Murphy 92; Renouard 64.9.
