With rounded ends and sliding tray, the top painted with three vertical cartouches each depicting a sage, the cartouches divided by black panels of gold flowering vine, the sides finely painted with scenes of elegant life including a family studying books around a table, and an outing in a carriage, the black base and red tray each with birds among fruiting vine, slight restoration, re-lacquered

Lot Essay

The sides of this penbox are in a style which is typical of Muhammad Isma'il, the younger brother of Aqa Najaf. The couple bowling along in their carriage is one of his best known compositions.
