Lot Essay

Cf. R. Higgins, Tanagra and the Figurines, London, 1987, p. 159, pl. 196 for a similar figure of a satyr mimicking a tragic heroine as she makes a declamation. Satyr plays were traditional rustic comedies in which satyrs disguised themselves as women and indulged in female activities.
