Lot Essay

The ring is composed of approximately 86 gold with smaller proportions of silver and copper. It has been suggested that these types of rings were used as a form of currency. For a close parallel, see an Irish gold ring acquired by Lord Algernon Percy, the 4th Duke of Northumberland (Sotheby's London, 14 December 1990, lot 68).
