A COPTIC TEXTILE FRAGMENT
CIRCA 6TH-8TH CENTURY A.D.
Composed of two fragments mounted together: the first in dark brown, on the right a warrior with curly hair holding a shield and spear, a dancing figure to the left, below a roundel with a nereid riding a sea monster with a lion below, with lotus flower borders; the other fragment with two dancing draped figures and a roundel with a hare, 7¾ x 2½ in. (19.5 x 6.5 cm.) and 6 x 4¼ in. (15.5 x 11 cm.) max.; a fragment with black and white detailed clavus band composed of central figurative roundel, flanked at either side by panels containing a stylized figure wearing cloak over one shoulder, with large spotted red hat and red feet, arm raised, 14 x 7 in. (35.5 x 18 cm.); a dark wool fragment with detailed sleeve band composed of parallel strips each with pair of scarab-like creatures interspersed with insects(?) in roundels, bordered by wave pattern, red and green details on yellow background, 7 7/8 x 5½ in. (20 x 14 cm.); and a clavus strip with red background containing a central flying figure carrying a bird out in front, blue stylized floral motifs at either side, with crenellated border, 18 x 2¾ in.
