Lot Essay

PUBLISHED:
Abbé H. Campbell, Op. cit., no. 11.; A. D. Trendall, LCS, op. cit, p. 157, no. 906, pl. 71, 6.

Trendall describes the almost facial form of the athlete's stomach: "we may note that the trick of emphasizing the nipples and navel...has been carried still further, preparing us for the final stage on...the Nostell nestoris (no. 906) where they look rather like huge staring eyes growing upon a human body".

Ink inscribed label '58' on base.
