Lot Essay

Described in Keith Bates' The Clockmakers of Northumberland and Durham (p. 169), where this engine is said to have been used by the Murray family of Rothbury. The dividing wheel is presumably re-used from another machine, since the outermost of the rings on the underside is right on the perimeter, suggesting that the wheel has been reduced to fit the present frame. The curved, sprung lever with wood hand-grip appears not to be original, nor is there any indication of there ever having been any legs or section for clamping in a vice.
