A.R. Paton, later known as Mrs David Octavius Hill, was sister of Sir Joseph Noel Paton, the sculptor. Her original marble bust of Livingstone was modelled from sittings, and exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1866 (no. 1032).
There is a life-size, full-length monument to the explorer, based upon the bust, in Princes Street Gardens, Edinburgh. The Scottish National Portrait Gallery possesses the plaster modello for the Princes Street Memorial (1868). Known versions of the bust of the explorer by Mrs Hill are at the Wallace Memorial (dated 1861) and the Livingstone National Memorial (dated 1861). No bronze reduction of these was hitherto recorded.
