L'Ambassade de la compagnie orientale des provinces unies vers l'Empereur de la Chine, ou Grand Cam de Tartarie... mis en François... par Jean le Carpentier. Leiden: Jacob van Meurs, 1665. 2° (36.4 x 23.7mm). Title in red and black with engraved vignette. Engraved additional title, portrait of Colbert, folding map (somewhat browned) and 34 double-page plates, numerous engraved illustrations. (Additional title and final leaf detached, title lightly soiled, occasional small marginal tears to plates.) contemporary calf (old re-backing, covers detached, extremities worn).

First edition in French. The work comprises an account of the embassy made by the Dutch East India Company to the Chinese court with many incidental remarks on the manners and customs of the Chinese, together with a second part sub-titled Description generale de l'empire de la Chine. The fine plates and illustrations show costume, natural history and numerous town views in China, Tibet and Tartary. Cordier 2345; Lust 534.
