La Chine et les Chinois. Paris: Goupil and Vibert, 1842. 2° (55 x 38cm). Engraved title, additional pictorial tinted lithographed title, 32 tinted lithographed plates on 25 leaves by Eugène Cicéri after Borget, 2 engraved dedication leaves.(some staining). Contemporary half morocco (slightly worn).
The fine plates include five Hong-Kong views, and the others relate to Macao and Canton. An English version was published in the same year. The plates are remarkable for the lack of that "feeling of superiority of the Chinese, so characteristic of accounts from the 1840s... The artist observes with a fresh eye." (Lust). Cordier 79-80.
